there is no way to use a name to get a tattoo. however if you have the papers, the registration # is the tattoo #, so say 0923456 would = M23456 as a tattoo. If you do not have the papers, unfortunately there is no other way then to look at their lip (and i know its not always possible like, if a horse passed away) I am not sure if the JC could help, but they might be able to and it wouldnt hurt to call and ask if you can not look at the lip for a specific reason

You have to know the tattoo number or part of it when using Tattoo Identification Services on the Jockey Club registry. She can look up her horse's race record and get a link to her pedigree on Equibase.com.

The difference between a QH tattoo and a TB tattoo is the placement of the letter. If the letter comes before the 5 numbers, it's a TB. If the letter comes after the 5 numbers, it's a QH. So if you try to read it again and it looks like the letter is the last thing then you've got a QH. AQHA will look up a tattoo number for free if you call them at 806-376-4811.

Ok so I'm definitely going with J03___ then. Unfortunately there are about 20 horses that match those numbers that are bay geldings with white on their face and their left hind. I'd say ask your vet to take a look at it the next time they're out. My vet helped read my girl's tattoo. Here are some tips to help read tattoos. Sorry I can't help more. Go to equibase.com look up the name.of the horse. The registration number is the tattoo number. The year born has a corresponding letter that will be in front of the tattoo number. The jockey club will have the code letters by year
