Alyx, check out Booking.com too. Dani and I stayed in the city for 2 nights@the Welcome Mercure on Swanston & Little Bourke Sts. Definitely do laneways & walk through the Arcades. They are majestic! The architecture is just Devine. Over the Yarra heading toward Crowne Casino little restaurant called La Camera: Italian & absolutely scrumptious. You will need to rug up as it is freezing. Shopping GALORE!!! Victoria Market is not what it used to be when I was living there. Cafe's, history etc. DFO at South Wharf is a must too. You may be able to catch a tram.
