I switched from oil to gas and went High Efficiency vented PVC and it saved me a ton of $. Also check for rebates from the state-I got $900 in rebates for doing my water tank and heater and my bill is literally in half across the board each month. I switched from electric to gas. I already had AC ducts, so it wasn't too complicated. I got multiple bids using this site: http://www.homeadvisor.com/?link_id=6808 Eventually, I contracted with Sterling which did a solid job but later robbed me on an AC repair charge. So, I'd say the best thing to do is shop around.
