If it's fine after jump started it then it's either the battery or something drawing power from it over night. Unlikely to be alternator if have a multimeter connect it to battery with engine running and see what voltage get anything over 14 but under 16 is good and can eliminate the alternator. This guide will show you how to check for a power drain http://m.wikihow.com/Find-a-Parasitic-Battery-Drain after that is only the battery left to test(replace).

Thanks for all the replies. I've taken it up to Andy Ford at Combe End and he says the battery and alternator are fine and it's exactly what Brian Bowen suggested, a 'parasitic battery drain'. Hopefully whatever it is will get diagnosed and sorted. It does mean that I bought a new battery for nothing so I'm selling the perfectly good old one for £25 if anyone wants it?
