I've heard that Mario's has recently made some changes to improve their menu and ambiance...maybe someone else on here can comment as I haven't been there in years, but have heard some good things most recently http://www.mariositalianrestaurantny.com/

I don't really get uptown enough to recommend anything above 14 th st. The only two comedy clubs in midtown are, I think, Gotham on 23 rd and Caroline's near Broadway and 50 ish. The Comedy Cellar in the village may be a bit lowbrow but there's a better chance that someone really famous shows up there to try out material, like Louie CK or Chris Rock.
