I just had 11 of my incoming exchange students stay at the HIVE Guesthouse in Umeda near the Sky Building. They seemed to like it and the biggest problem was that the computer in the free room had a virus. Near by is also a bigger hostel called Dormy Inn which also looked fine.

I liked J-Hoppers when I stayed there 5 years or so ago. 1 station before Osaka station (Fukushima), located in a small shotengai. The Khaosan chain was also nice anywhere in Japan

DropInn Osaka has a spacious, bright common area where one can easily work. Good wifi too. Slightly pricier than say, Jhoppers but still reasonable.

U-en guesthouse is pretty good even though it's a little bit pricey, or you could try hostel viaggio, got them for around $13 a night

I think the nicest place to stay is in Horie. It is just west of Shinsaibashi. Amerika Mura is super central. Then you also have the other side, Matsuyamachi which is also nice.
