Anyone know of a small hobby, clock worker, or jeweler lathe about 24 to 36 inches long for sale under $400?

If you can get a deal on a used American or British one, and are confident it's not worn out, go that way. Otherwise I highly recommend the HF. If you outgrow the short bed Little Machine Shop sells a 14" upgrade. They are also the place to get most of the tooling and upgrades.
