Anyone know of a good used car dealership in Raleigh? I'm looking for something cheap and preferably Japanese.

Bought my last car from Enterprise on Glenwood. Fairly priced and they would buy it back within a week for any reason, no questions. Also got a year of ownership with a full warranty at no cost. Never had an issue with the car 4 years later and would buy there again.

Oh I just got my Sentra from Auction Direct. I had a good experience and so did the coworker who referred me. They have a good but quickly rotating selection

Auction Direct USA on Glenwood.

I usually just search on autotrader for used cars at dealerships. You can filter by price and make and then go to whichever dealership(s) have the car(s) that interest you.
zoltan-x replied:
By "cheap" how much do you mean? Under $5 k? Under $10 k? What's your budget?

Randy Cavender on Old Wake Forest rd off Millbrook is great to deal with.

I don’t have a place to give you but i do have advice.
You want a Toyota/Lexus. Honda/Acura are hit and miss (automatic transmissions are not as reliable), but i had a Honda fit, and in loved it. Perfect inner city car.
Definitely not a Nissan/infinity, or Mitsubishi, or Subaru (unreliable engine).
Yeah Toyota is boring, but it’s a tool. It gets the job done, and doesn’t really break. Don’t let society define you by the vehicle you drive, or tool that you use.
Carmax is not the cheapest deal, I’ve bought several cars from them. Great buying experience. I like them because I hate car buying negotiations, but since they don’t negotiate, it means they already added the premium to the price.
The cheapest I found was Carvana. Its cheap because they don’t have to hire a lot of staff, and their business does not need a lot of commercial real estate. The problem is, it’s to know what you’re getting since you can’t test drive. You buy, and have 7 days to test it, bring into a mechanic, and return it.
I bought a 2018 Toyota Sienna from Carvana with 80k miles. Its a Fleet vehicle- a large company like Johnson and johnson, buys these to drive around people, or its for their security guard...or what ever. These are not rental vehicles. I only bought from them because i was confident that a company car probably wouldn’t be driven hard...especially a minivan. But even if they did...its a Toyota with a V6 engine.
Last advice:
- See if you can get a list of cars before you show up to the dealership.
- pick out the car models you’re interested in, and goto the forums for that model. See what people are complaining about when things break. See if theres a pattern.
- I did this for my Sienna...not a whole lot of major problems(engine, transmission, suspension, HVAC). Honda Odyssey on the other hand...oooh boy.

I went to Lieth Homda on Capitol 3 weeks ago. The guy that helped me (Art) was awesome. I found a car that was slightly more what I wanted at another dealership (not a Honda). He told me that if I wanted a "not Honda" I might be better off going to a dealership for that brand because I might be able to get a better deal or a certified preowned. So honest, I was shocked.
sixtysixer replied:
RDU Auto, look no further. Their prices are very very competitive and they aren't pushy.
katsumex replied:
There's a lot that goes into this. Your budget etc... Most places you can find a used camry for a reasonable price or a civic etc... Always always no matter what bring a qualified mechanic with you or someone who knows a thing about cars to give it a check especially if it was ever North of the rust belt. Even certified pre owned are sometimes not checked depending on the dealership so yeah. I've never really haggled on buying a used car but i'm sure it applies the same as a new car so always have your "this is as high as ill buy a car for" price and don't budge over it.

Made in Japan, or a Japanese brand?

https://www.allstarautomart.com/ It’s in benson, so 30-45 m from raleigh. Great little dealership. Wonderful service. Ask for bill.

Not Fred Andersen. They screwed me on a lease I turned in to them and I’m still dealing with the repercussions 3 years later.
Bob_Sconce replied:
Define "Cheap." Bought our last car from Carvana and both the price and buying experience were great. However, if you're looking for something with, say, 150,000 miles for $5K, then Carvana is not the place -- they tend to sell later-model cars. (Ours, a 2015 Honda CRV, was $15,500 there.)

My GF got a good deal on a Vibe at Hanna Imports when they were located on Capital Blvd 9 years ago. They have since moved to Wake Forest Road and are a much bigger operation so not sure if they still have that same good experience but figured I’d mention how it was 9 years ago.

Not Silver State Imports - they sold me a good car but approached me afterwards and said they mistakenly over paid for my trade-in and wanted me to give them another $500.
I did feel a little bad, he claimed there was a transmission issue that would cost $1500 to repair (I knew my trade-in had issues but didn't know it was that bad) I briefly considered giving them some money but then he said:
> I am writing to ask you to consider helping me with $500. It's the right thing to do, but you certainly are not obligated. If you will do so, I have an extra key, an owner's manual, and a stack of service records with your name on them.
During the initial sale he said he thought the spare key and paperwork were misplaced and he was going to look for them and give them to me when they turned up.
Then he tried to guilt me into giving them more money and using the spare key as leverage. A very dirty tactic.

I got my last car at ReDrive. It’s a small lot but they seem to specialize in Hondas. The pricing was fair and the few mechanical services that I wanted done were really affordable.
SonnySwanson replied:
CarMax is going to give you the best experience and a fair deal. It won't be the cheapest car you can find, but it will be in great shape and the process will be super simple. Don't bother with additional warranties. Walk in with your own financing from your bank or credit union, or cash if you're not financing. Do not, under any circumstances purchase a used rental car. The risk is not worth the price, which isn't very good anyway.

I wouldn't trust any used car dealers completely. Your best bet is just to find the best deal at any random used car dealer but pay the $50 to get the thing inspected independently before buying. Often the used dealer will offer to fix any issues found during the inspection.

We had 0 problems with them and 0 problems with the cars we bought. 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer 2006 Kia Spectra 2006 VW Beetle We paid cash for all 4 vehicles so we didn't have to deal with their finance department.

I would recommend Auction Direct USA. Each car has it's price & that's it. No haggling, and the price is guaranteed to be the lowest in the area. The salespeople do not earn comission, and if they don't have the car you're looking for, they'll buy it at auction for you. I had a great experience with them, as have my fiancé and several friends whom I referred.
ydnolb4 replied:
I would just look on Craigslist for sales by owner. In my experience, individual owners are far more honest than any car dealer.

CarMax or Auction Direct in Raleigh

I would buy from carmax, but check prices on cars.com and eBay and you can find better prices. Look over a period of time too, not just right now. And consider driving to Atlanta or DC for a good price or what you want...
tmhiott replied:
There is a smaller family owned used car place on Old Wake Forest road called Stone Cars. I've bought two cars there (both mine and my wife's). Excellent cars, clean and good service. Owned the cars for almost a year and zero problems, they're honest. Its owned/run by two brothers and would highly recommend going there.
dbv replied:
15 k and up you should be buying a "certified" pre-owned car. Below that, Carmax is reliable.

Silver state imports has a good selection of mid to high end cars. Theyll work w you as much as they can on prices. Nice guys for the most part. Im a repeat customer
Samsterdam replied:
Go to Carmax. They are awesome and will fix anything that is wrong with you car if you find it with in the first 30 days of you owing it. Also pretty good financing and lots of selection. If I ever buy another used car I am going there.
