La Carolina Lodge, near Rio Celeste waterfall and Volcan Tenorio is a unique lodge. Rooms are a bit rustic but not uncomfortable, and can be romantic. We had a cabin by a small stream. The rooms and grounds are lit by candles at night (a small electric light is also in the room if needed). If you stay a few nights you can book a tour to Rio Celeste and can go horseback riding at the lodge - or help milk the cows! Food is good, Costa Rican style, served at a group table (or you can request a private table). Nice gardens with many birds. http://cms.lacarolinalodge.com/

All big name boring options. Try Vida Tropical in Alajuela,6 min to the airport,free breakfast,good wifi. nice people and safe town to walk about in even at night. about 50$.

Buses Mepe go to Puerto Viejo like $6. Cheap place to stay around bus station, creepy area but do the holets.com or airbnb.com. $25 a night at cacoon hotel online. pretty descent and safe.

Are you talking about Gran Terminal del Caribe? Or Caribenos? Either way, this is not a very safe area to stay in. I recommend you don't walk around, especially when it's dark. There's a Radisson and Holiday Inn nearby.

Near Sarchi you would have "El Silencio" no pool but fantastic views in the mountains and an experience on its own. Not cheap though.

Rancho Amalia is great..yummy food close to zarcero downtown n car..5 mins..what a view at night..priceless..there s a pool n zarcero..public but nice n center of zarcero..walking there was a nice hike I enjoyed a lot last year..my CRican best friend lives n Zarcero
