Change text size for the story Print Report an error New family physician Dr. Blake Abawi is looking forward to beginning his practice in January at Beck Street Medical in Wasaga Beach. "What I'm looking forward to is finally being able to help people in a way that I've thought about for so long and been training for for so long and being a part of the community," he said. "I'm finally meeting this huge goal, this light at the end of the tunnel. It's almost like you are finally in the drivers seat," he said. Becoming a doctor has been 10 years in the making. Abawi, 30, grew up in Oakville and moved to Vancouver after high school where he got his bachelor of arts and medical degree from the University of British Columbia. He and his wife Sarah and son Logan moved to Collingwood in May, 2013 to start his residency in Collingwood through the Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP). The program co-ordinates medical rotations for future physicians from the six medical universities in Ontario to alleviate the physician distribution problem in rural areas of Ontario. Locally, the program was started by Dr. Peter Wells, a Collingwood family doctor. Abawi canvassed the rural medicine program at McMaster University to get here. He did his family medicine training in Wasaga Beach with Dr. Peter Holloway at the West End Family Practice for two years. He also trained in different specialities at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital. He recently completed his two-year residency in July and has been training in emergency medicine since then. The Abawis purchased a home in Collingwood and have a 17-month-old daughter. "This is where we wanted to live long-term. I knew it from growing up. This is where I would come to play in the outdoors; snowboard in the winter and windsurf in the summer and mountain biking," he said. He did a rotation locally for a month in his fourth year of medicine. It also served as a test for Sarah, who is from Virginia. "Sarah really loved the community when we were here so I said 'Perfect.' I knew I wanted to come here with the family and she was on board, too. We came here with the intention to stay and certainly living here over the past two years confirmed that," he said. The Ministry of Health has declared that Collingwood is no longer under-serviced but the surrounding municipalities of Wasaga Beach, Clearview and the Town of The Blue Mountains continue to be high-needs areas. "The area certainly has a physician shortage relative to its population," he said. A lot of new doctors like to practice medicine in cities because they like the urban environment or because they specialize and large hospitals are the only place they can work, he explained. Abawi looks at it differently in that doctors can work in rural areas where it can be otherwise difficult to make a living. Ontario had the smallest proportion of Canadian medical school graduates practising family medicine in rural areas, at about 16%, according to a 2013 article in the Canadian Journal of Rural Medicine. "In provinces like Ontario, there are many cash incentives to practise in urban centres of need, so graduates of Canadian medical schools who set up a practice in a rural setting are likely doing so by choice rather than because of incentives alone." Abawi has chosen Collingwood because of the lifestyle it offers. "Collingwood is this amazing community where the culture and town and industry have made it this outdoors mecca and there's jobs here," he said. Abawi will be working Dr. Joe Greyling and Dr. Antoni Basinski at Beck Street Medical. He is booking patients for appointments in mid-January.
