Award winning vegetarian restaurant The Quince and Medlar in Cockermouth. You don't have to be vegetarian to enjoy it!

Had my birthday lunch in The Kirkstile at Loweswater today - followed by a walk! Really nice! I like The Chalet at Portinscale too!

Sportmans Inn at Troutbeck is fab, especially sizzling duck

We were in Keswick a couple of weeks ago and had excellent meals at The George, the Packhorse Inn and a pizza/steak house which I think was called Woodsmoke. All very good food and service but maybe not the romantic ambience you are looking for. Luca's was recommended to us but we ran out of time.

The Hare and Hounds at Bowland Bridge is fab, lovely location as well.

The Gate Inn at Yanwath is a really good old fashioned style inn with great food atmosphere and service. We have been twice and live nearby. However, it might take you 30-40 mins to get there. Cassa Bella in Keswick is always vert good

Adriana's Carlisle - great Italian food. Scafell Hotel at Rosthwaite, just 15 mins from Keswick, lovely ride and excellent food.

Drunken Duck Inn near Ambleside is a very good Gastro Style Pub. If you want to push the boat out go to Rogan and Co which us in Cartmel (Simon Rogans Bistro restaurant) near to Lenclume but considerably cheaper. Lunch is excellent value for money.

Only 1 place to go The Kirkstile Inn near Loweswater.

Lyzzick Hall underneath Skiddaw on east side of Bassenthwaite has amazing food, we stayed there in February and dinner was fantastic with great wine list, mainly Spanish. Friendly service and views to die for. We will definitely be going back.

if you just want pub food The Bank Pub is good value

Morrels Restaurant Keswick always good food and nice staff

The Cedar Tree Dining Room at Winder Hall hotel at Lorton, between Keswick and Cockermouth. Open to non residents, gorgeous setting, v friendly staff.

Another vote for The Chalet at Portinscale - the food is truly exceptional, check out their comments on tripadvisor. I think they show the menu on their website
