My first Ottb had the same thing and didn't have surgery. He ended up with osteoarthritis but only because he was 2 when it happened and the bones grew to quick. But with stall rest and time I have seen so many from the track heal just fine without surgery. My guy had 120 days stall rest then light riding after that. My vet recommended a supplement called osiform to help with bone growth and said he would need injections later in life. Sadly my guys was so bad he was for ever lame. But I'm. It trying to scare you. There are a lot of positive outcomes with them of the 3rd carpel. Take your time and don't push him. I know your not going to but take all the time you need and just have it re xrayed. Shockwave therapy helps too.
